I’ve just been looking at the Sunday Times Rich List 2006, the definitive guide to the richest 1,000 people in Britain and Ireland.

The Rich List always makes for interesting reading. I love to see how much people are worth, who has gone up in value (and who’s gone down), and how they made their money.

Property – The World’s Greatest-Ever Investment

Ah, yes. Property. Forget Football, the NHS or petrol prices. It’s fair to say the U.K.’s real national obsession has got to be property.

It’s everywhere you look. Turn on the TV and (if you’ll pardon the pun) it’s wall to wall House Doctor, Kirsty and Phil, A Place in the Sun, Extreme Makeover, Changing Rooms. You can’t move for property-investing programmes (and now there’s even a 24-hour property channel on Satellite TV!)

And that’s just on TV. When it comes to national newspapers, all of them have at least one large Property Supplement, in which you’re offered all kinds of ‘can’t lose’ property deals. UK Property. Property Overseas. Buy-To-Let. Off-Plan. New build. Beachfront villas. You name it. Someone offers it. The list is endless.

And if there’s one topic of conversation guaranteed to wake the dead at any pub, restaurant or dinner party, it’s got to be property. How much is yours worth? How much is your friend’s property worth? (And how much has YOUR property gone up compared to theirs?)

There’s a good reason for all the frenzy surrounding property and property investment. And it’s a simple one.

Despite what you may have heard in the press, property is still the simplest way available for the average person to get rich, even if you don’t have much money to start with.
